Greg Jones (Wingshadow Flutes) made this exceptional Alaskan Yellow Cedar instrument. The sound of this flute is almost indescribably smooth, expressive, and expansive. Tuned to the key of F#, its performance and recording capabilities are truly astounding- this flute is the cornerstone of my new recording...
Reclaimed old growth Western Red Cedar flute made by Billy Spear (Wild Wood Flutes), with rosewood block. Played on tracks 1, 5, 10, and 12 of Belonging to the Sun and the Moon. Very sweet sounding and responsive flute. This an exceptional instrument for recording and playing. Perfectly tuned Gm.

'Old Raven' , made by Jeff Calavan (Laughing Mallard/Custom Flute Shop/Oregon Flute Store). This beautifully and expertly crafted high B minor instrument is tiny but powerful! This is a fantastic flute, especially for outdoor playing. The clear and perfectly tuned notes (with a pleasing hint of harmonics) soar above the wind (or any other environmental sounds) - it's also very responsive. Jeff applied a light, satin finish that lets the texture and aroma of the ancient Redwood shine through - adding to the very traditional look and feel. A wood-burned, painted, and abalone inlaid Northwest Coast Raven adorns this wonderful flute, and the block is made of palm wood. 7/8" bore. I plan to use this instrument in future recording projects..

'Spirit Horse', created by Ted Calavan (Tu Trees Flutes/Oregon Flute Store). With the birch bark spacer and hickory horse block adjusted just right, this flute sings with an evocative, beautiful and very traditional voice. The sound is warm, with a totally integrated and positive breathiness - complete with a haunting and rounded internal echo. Lots of harmonics. Notes can be tongued aggressively, and do not overblow accidentally. Body is old-growth Port Orford Cedar, thick walled and sturdy. The carving, detail work, and proportions of this instrument are without peer . Plays, sounds and feels like a real 19th century courting flute - but with more familiar tuning. It is a unique and amazing experience to play this instrument. Key of Gm.
Western Red Cedar flute made by Matt Stewart (Stellar Flutes). Very thin-walled, lightweight and responsive - excellent player, and beautifully proportioned. A very special and capable flute. Shown here with beadwork by DLQ. Has an internal echo not often heard in Plains style flutes. Key of Em.
Silver Edition Sonoran flute made by Ken Light (Amon Olorin Flutes) in 1994. Very refined and beautiful sound - even when compared to other Ken Light flutes. This is a superb instrument. Ken Light's flutes have an amazing purity of tone, but are not 'sterile'. They also posses an excellent range. Key of Gm.
F# Western Red Cedar flute with oval bore and brass spacer, made by Navajo flute maker Paul Thompson. Shown here with beadwork by DLQ. An unusual and capable instrument that has a very authentic feel, a beautiful sound, and is expertly crafted.
