| This
gorgeous Sandhill Crane flute with old-style stepped block, was
made by Greg Jones (Wingshadow Flutes/Oregon Flute Store). The body
is constructed of beautiful, old Port Orford Cedar (reclaimed from
an Oregon railroad tunnel built in the 1890s), and the block and
Crane's crest are of Purpleheart. I was immediately struck by the
clarity and beauty of this instrument's voice - it is like liquid
silk, and the transition to the notes above the octave is effortless.
The dynamic range is incredible - notes sound with the slightest
breath, but can also be played loudly and forcefully. Perfectly
tuned in the key F#, this is a phenomenal studio and performance
quality instrument that embodies the spirit of its maker. Last image:

| 'Apache
Sprit Flute' by the late Nev Autrey. This gorgeous little 4-hole
flute has a beautiful and unique voice - no doubt due to its walnut
body and wood spacer. All handcarved, and adorned with intricate
Peyote stitch beadwork (by Nev Autrey), this flute has a jewel-like
quality . The fundamental pitch is high C#. |

| This
very nice Low Am flute was made by Dusty Moore of Tsunami Flutes,
and was a given to me by Jim and Robin McDonald. A haunting and
mysterious sounding instrument, beautifully made of Western Red
Cedar. Played on track 11 of Belonging to the Sun and the Moon. |

Michael
Graham Allen's (Coyote Oldman Music) 1880s Sioux Replica. The
effigy represents a Sandhill Crane. This flute is a measured exact
replica of an original from the late Richard W. Payne's collection.
The model had a non-original block, so Michael created this beautiful,
traditional stepped block - based on other similar flutes from
the region and time period. The mouthpiece is made from a brass
rifle cartridge casing. The scale (which matches the original)
does not conform to the modern pentatonic 'standard' tuning -
this instrument has its own unique voice. Complete with tool marks
and hammered brass spacer. Fundamental note is G# to A, depending
on breath pressure.

Ultra- low Gm Sitka Spruce flute made by Geoffrey Ellis (Earthtone
Flutes), and sold exclusively by the Oregon Flute Store. This
one of the nicest playing and sounding bass instrument I have
ever played - sounds beautiful in the studio, or live. Side-blown,
with Woodlands-style voicing.
